Multiplier EOR Caribbean audit: partner network, severance accruals and the real cost in Barbados
Multiplier is commonly quoted at $400-$499 per employee per month, below the $599 global list benchmark, which makes it a frequent shortlist pick. In the Caribbean the line items to check are the in-country partner arrangement and any monthly severance accrual added to the invoice. For eight staff in Bridgetown on BBD 6,000 a month, our example totals $383,392 in year one, of which $13,846 is a severance accrual that you should ask to be refundable.

What Multiplier is and how it typically operates in the Caribbean
Multiplier is a global EOR, contractor and payroll platform with a strong presence in Asia-Pacific and a growing footprint in the Americas. Its strengths are a price point that is usually below the big two global platforms, a clean multi-country dashboard, and responsive sales and implementation teams. For a mid-market company that wants global coverage without paying $599 per seat, it is a credible option.
In smaller markets, Multiplier, like most global EORs, may employ through regional partner firms rather than its own subsidiary. A partner model is not a problem in itself; many partners are experienced local payroll and PEO operators. The buyer simply needs to know who the employer is and how responsibilities split. For each island, ask Multiplier to confirm:
- The employing entity in Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad, and whether it is owned or a partner.
- Who registers the employee with the Barbados NIS and BRA, and who files the monthly return due on the 15th.
- Who handles a dispute before the Barbados Employment Rights Tribunal, and who pays legal costs.
- Whether the partner holds client funds in a segregated account.
Multiplier pricing structure: what a Caribbean quote commonly contains
Multiplier quotes are usually custom. The ranges below come from quotes we have seen and market benchmarks; use them as a reference point, not as Multiplier list prices.
| Cost line | Commonly quoted | What to ask in writing |
|---|---|---|
| EOR fee | $400-$499 PEPM | Fee per country, volume tiers, renewal cap |
| Severance / termination accrual | Monthly accrual of statutory severance in some quotes | Formula, whether refundable if no termination occurs, where it is held |
| Security deposit | 1-2 months gross | Whether the accrual replaces or adds to the deposit |
| FX | 1.5%-3% reported; should be narrow on pegged BBD | Reference rate and margin; BBD is fixed at 2:1 to USD |
| Setup | Often $0 | Any one-time fee for a new country or partner onboarding |
| Benefits | At cost or with admin margin | Plan, carrier and renewal terms |
The accrual line is the one most buyers miss. It can be reasonable for a provider to protect itself against severance it would owe as employer, but the terms vary widely. Put a quote into the EOR fee audit calculator with and without the accrual to see the difference.
Ask also how the quote handles 13th-month or bonus pay in markets that have it, such as the Dominican Republic, and whether the fee is charged on the bonus month.
Worked 12-month cost: 8 finance and operations staff in Bridgetown
Assumptions: eight employees on BBD 6,000 per month (BBD 72,000 per year, $36,000 at the fixed 2:1 peg), EOR fee at the $450 midpoint, a severance accrual of 2.5 weeks of pay per year, FX margin of 1.5%. Barbados rates are 2026 figures; confirm with the NIS and BRA before payroll is run.
Barbados severance only becomes payable after 104 weeks of continuous service, so in year one there is no statutory liability to fund. An accrual is therefore a timing and cash-flow question, not an extra cost, if it is refundable. If it is not refundable, it is a $13,846 fee. Ask which, in writing.
Contract clauses to check
- Accrual terms. Where the accrual is held, whether it earns interest, and whether it is refunded in full at exit or conversion if no redundancy occurs.
- Severance formula. Barbados pays 2.5 weeks per year for years 1-10, 3 weeks for years 11-20, and 3.5 weeks for years 21-33 under the Severance Payments Act, with a partial NIS rebate available to the employer. Confirm the rebate is credited to you.
- Partner substitution. Your right to be notified and to object if the in-country partner changes.
- Statutory pass-through. Line-by-line NIS and RRF on invoices so you can check the BBD 5,360 ceiling is applied.
- Data and exit. Data location and sub-processors; notice period, conversion fee, and transfer of service years if staff move to your entity. The redundancy playbook covers the notice tiers.
Barbados also has a statutory notice scale: 2 weeks for 1-5 years of service, 4 weeks for 5-10 years and 8 weeks above 10. Ask that notice pay in lieu is invoiced at cost with no EOR margin. Where Multiplier uses a partner, check that the partner contract flows these obligations through, since the partner is the employer named in any tribunal claim. Finally, ask how disputes between you, Multiplier and the partner are resolved and in which jurisdiction.
When Multiplier fits, and when it does not
Multiplier is a good fit when you need several countries on one platform, want a lower base fee than the $599 benchmark, and have a small number of hires per island. It is often the value pick for companies hiring in both Asia and the Caribbean.
Look further when the severance accrual is non-refundable, when you plan a concentrated team in one island, or when the employer turns out to be a local partner you could engage directly for $195-$350 PEPM. For multi-island hospitality or BPO buyers, a regional operator or your own entity with a bureau may be cheaper. See Multiplier vs Papaya Global and EOR vs PEO vs payroll bureau.
A sensible approach for multi-island buyers is to price Multiplier against both a global list-price provider and a direct regional operator for the same scope. If Multiplier lands between them with confirmed entity details and refundable accrual terms, it is often the balanced choice. If the gap to the regional quote is larger than about $2,000 per employee per year, the regional route usually wins at 8+ seats. Also check the hospitality multi-island playbook if you run seasonal staff.
Negotiation levers
- Refundable or no accrual. Ask for the accrual to be dropped in year one (no statutory liability before 104 weeks in Barbados or Jamaica) or made fully refundable.
- Deposit offset. If an accrual is kept, ask that it replace the deposit rather than add to it.
- Pegged-currency FX. BBD, BSD, XCD, ANG and AWG are pegged; ask for a margin well below the 1.5% used here, or fund in USD at the peg.
- Volume tier. A fee at the low end of the $400-$499 range for 8+ seats is a reasonable ask.
- Price lock. Hold the fee for 24 months and cap renewals.
Put the accrual terms into a schedule that lists, for each country, the formula, where funds are held and the refund trigger. That makes year-end reconciliation easy and avoids disputes at exit. If Multiplier declines to change the accrual, ask for interest on the balance or a cap equal to one month of gross pay per employee. Bring a competing regional quote for the same eight seats; it is the most persuasive argument on price.

FAQs
How much does Multiplier cost in the Caribbean?
Quotes we have seen range from $400 to $499 per employee per month for Caribbean EOR, below the $599 global list benchmark. Deposits, FX margins and any severance accrual are priced separately and should be confirmed in the order form.
What is a severance accrual surcharge?
Some EOR quotes add a monthly charge that pre-funds the statutory severance the employer would owe on termination. It can be reasonable, but ask whether it is refundable if no redundancy occurs and whether it replaces the deposit.
When does Barbados severance become payable?
Under the Severance Payments Act an employee qualifies after 104 weeks of continuous service. The formula is 2.5 weeks of pay per year for years 1-10, rising to 3 and then 3.5 weeks for longer service.
Should I pay an FX margin on Barbados dollars?
BBD is pegged at 2 to 1 against the USD, so conversion risk is minimal. Ask for a margin well below what is charged on floating currencies such as JMD or DOP, or for payroll funded at the peg.
