Trinidad and Tobago vs Guyana for engineering, finance and energy operations

Trinidad and Tobago offers a deep, experienced energy and finance workforce with established industrial relations; Guyana offers the fastest-growing oil and gas market in the region, with Local Content Act obligations that shape who you hire. For a senior engineer, Guyana's capped NIS makes the employer load lighter, but Trinidad's severance is more than double at five years of service and its TTD payroll can be harder to fund.

Worked example: one senior engineer in each country

Salaries are illustrative planning benchmarks for a senior process or subsea engineer, not survey data; replace them with your own offer levels. FX is the November 2026 benchmark: USD 1 = TTD 6.78 and GYD 209.

Trinidad and Tobago: gross TTD 25,000 per month Employer NIS 10.8% x 13,600 (cap) = TTD 1,468.80 Effective load 1,468.80 / 25,000 = 5.88% of gross Monthly cost 25,000 + 1,468.80 = TTD 26,468.80 In USD 26,468.80 / 6.78 = USD 3,903.95 Guyana: gross GYD 900,000 per month Employer NIS 8.4% x 280,000 (cap) = GYD 23,520.00 Effective load 23,520 / 900,000 = 2.61% of gross Monthly cost 900,000 + 23,520 = GYD 923,520.00 In USD 923,520 / 209 = USD 4,418.76 Annual, 6 engineers per country, regional EOR at $250 PEPM, FX 2.5% Trinidad: 3,903.95 x 72 = 281,084.40 + fee 18,000 + FX 7,027.11 = USD 306,111.51 Guyana: 4,418.76 x 72 = 318,150.72 + fee 18,000 + FX 7,953.77 = USD 344,104.49

Because both social security systems are capped, the statutory load falls as salary rises; for senior technical staff it is a small part of total cost. The salary level, set by competition for scarce skills in Georgetown, drives the result. Note that the Trinidad total NIS rate rises to 19.2% in January 2027; at the cap that will lift the employer figure, so ask NIBTT or your provider for the confirmed 2027 employer split before budgeting next year.

Severance exposure at five years

Energy projects end, and redundancy is part of the cost model. Same benchmark engineers, five years of service, terminated for redundancy.

Trinidad (RSBA): TTD 25,000 per month Weekly basic pay 25,000 x 12 / 52 = TTD 5,769.23 Years 1-4: 2 weeks x 4 = 8 weeks; year 5: 3 weeks; total 11 weeks Severance 5,769.23 x 11 = TTD 63,461.54 In USD 63,461.54 / 6.78 = USD 9,360.11 Plus 45 days' written notice when 5+ workers are retrenched Guyana (TESPA): GYD 900,000 per month Weekly pay 900,000 x 12 / 52 = GYD 207,692.31 Years 1-5: 1 week x 5 = 5 weeks Severance 207,692.31 x 5 = GYD 1,038,461.54 In USD 1,038,461.54 / 209 = USD 4,968.72 Plus 1 month written notice after 1 year

Trinidad's exposure is nearly double despite the lower salary. Trinidad's Industrial Court is also an active forum for unfair dismissal claims, so process matters as much as the payment. See the redundancy and Industrial Court playbook and run your own numbers in the severance calculator.

Local content, talent pools and FX

Guyana Local Content Act. Oil and gas contractors and subcontractors must meet Guyanese employment and procurement requirements overseen by the Local Content Secretariat. An EOR can employ Guyanese nationals for you, but the reporting obligation sits with your company, so confirm how the provider's payroll records will support your filings. Our Guyana oil and gas playbook covers this in detail.

Talent. Trinidad has decades of petrochemical, LNG and offshore experience, plus a strong finance and accounting pool. Guyana's local workforce is growing quickly but senior technical roles are often filled by Trinidadian and other CARICOM nationals; check CSME skilled-national eligibility before applying for work permits, using the CSME and work permit guide.

FX. Trinidad's commercial banks have had tight USD supply for years. That matters most in reverse, when staff or vendors need USD, but it can also slow how quickly a foreign provider's funding is converted and released as TTD payroll. Quotes we have seen put conversion costs at 2.5%-4% when not structured well. Guyana's GYD is less of an operational concern for payroll funding, but ask for the margin all the same.

Questions to put in writing, and a decision checklist

  1. Which entity employs our staff in each country, and is it registered with NIBTT or Guyana NIS and GRA under its own name?
  2. For Trinidad: when and how will the January 2027 NIS rate be applied, and what is the employer share?
  3. For Trinidad: how do you fund TTD payroll, what is your margin over the reference rate, and how many days between our USD funding and payday?
  4. For Guyana: what payroll reports do you provide to support Local Content Act employment filings?
  5. For both: who calculates severance, and is it billed at cost?
  • Role mix is clear: which positions must be nationals, which can be CSME or expat.
  • Salary benchmarks come from current local offers, not this page.
  • Redundancy reserve is budgeted for the project end date.
  • Seat cost is modeled in the ROI calculator for Trinidad and for Guyana.
  • Provider quotes are checked in the EOR fee audit.
Statutory rates are 2026 figures; confirm with NIBTT, the Inland Revenue Division, Guyana NIS and GRA before payroll is run. Salaries on this page are illustrative benchmarks.
