The four cost lines in an EOR contract

An EOR invoice has two parts: pass-through payroll (gross pay and statutory contributions, which you pay whoever the provider is) and the provider’s charges. This calculator isolates the second part, because that is where providers differ.

  1. Platform fee — the per-employee monthly fee. Use your quote, or the benchmark for the provider.
  2. FX spread — when you fund in USD and staff are paid in JMD, TTD, GYD, DOP or BBD, the provider converts. A margin over the mid-market rate on the whole funding amount is a real cost even when it is not on the invoice.
  3. Off-currency surcharge — paying staff in USD instead of local currency often carries a flat monthly surcharge (about $50 PEPM is commonly reported). In that case FX still applies to the statutory remittances, which are always local.
  4. Deposit — one or two months of payroll held by the provider. The calculator charges it at an 8% annual cost of capital.

Worked example: 15 staff in Trinidad and Tobago

Avg gross USD 3,000/mo = TTD 20,340 (benchmark 6.78) Employer NIS: 10.8% × TTD 13,600 = TTD 1,468.80 = USD 216.64 Funding per head = 3,000 + 216.64 = USD 3,216.64 Global EOR (local-currency contract, 2-month deposit) Fee 599 × 15 × 12 = USD 107,820.00 FX 2.5% × 3,216.64 × 15 × 12 = USD 14,474.88 Deposit 2 × 3,216.64 × 15 = 96,499.20 × 8% = USD 7,719.94 12-month total = USD 130,014.82 Regional EOR Fee 250 × 15 × 12 = USD 45,000.00 FX 0.5% × 3,216.64 × 15 × 12 = USD 2,894.98 12-month total = USD 47,894.98 Difference = USD 82,119.84

Trinidad is the island where FX matters most in practice, because USD liquidity at commercial banks is tight; see the Trinidad NIS and FX payroll guide.

Questions to ask any EOR in writing

  • Which legal entity employs the worker in this island? Is it yours or an in-country partner’s, and what is its registration number?
  • How is FX priced: which rate source, what margin, and when is the conversion done?
  • Is there a surcharge for paying in USD or another non-local currency?
  • How large is the deposit, is it held in a segregated account, and when is it refunded?
  • Are severance or 13th-month amounts accrued and billed monthly, and are accruals refunded if not used?
  • What is the notice period to leave, and is there a fee to transfer employees to a new EOR or your own entity?

FAQs

How much does Deel cost for an employee in Jamaica?

Deel’s list price for EOR is $599 per employee per month. On a USD 2,500 salary, a 2.5% FX spread on funding adds about $70 a month, and a one-month deposit ties up about $2,800 per employee.

What is a normal FX spread on payroll funding?

Aggregator platforms commonly price conversion at 1.5%–3.5% over the mid-market rate. A bank or provider invoicing in local currency at mid-market plus about 0.5% is a reasonable benchmark to negotiate toward.

Is the EOR deposit refundable?

Usually yes, at the end of the contract after final payroll and severance are settled. Ask for the refund timeline and whether the deposit can be replaced by a bank guarantee.

Why is a regional EOR cheaper?

Direct regional operators employ through their own local entities, avoid a second layer of partner margin and usually invoice in local currency. Their typical fee range is $195–$350 per employee per month.
